Bhai Dooj falls on the Dwitiya of Kartika Shukla paksha, two days after the Diwali new moon. Sisters apply tilak to their brothers and pray for their long life, and brothers give gifts in return. It is Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal and Bhai Tika in Nepal; the tilak is done in the afternoon (Aparahna).
Good to know
Bhai Duj is a restricted holiday for Central Government offices. Banks close in a few states (six RBI offices in 2026, including Lucknow, Shimla and Imphal for Ningol Chakkouba).
