Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) is the eighth day of Sharad Navratri. In North India families hold Kanya Puja, feeding young girls as forms of the Goddess; in Bengal it is the most important day of Durga Puja, with pushpanjali in the morning and Sandhi Puja at the meeting of Ashtami and Navami.
Good to know
Dussehra (Mahashtami) is a restricted holiday for Central Government offices. Banks close in many eastern and southern states (16 RBI offices in 2026, partly for Maha Navami and Ayudha Puja on the same date).
