Durga Puja runs from Maha Shashthi to Vijaya Dashami in the bright half of Ashwin. The main days are Maha Saptami (Nabapatrika snan), Maha Ashtami with Sandhi Puja at the junction of Ashtami and Navami, and Maha Navami; on Dashami the idols are immersed and married women play sindoor khela. Kolkata's pandals draw millions of visitors.
Good to know
Dussehra (Saptami) is a restricted holiday for Central Government offices, and an additional day for Dussehra is one of the 12 optional holidays. West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Odisha close banks for several Puja days under the RBI list.
