Lohri is the winter festival of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu, celebrated around a bonfire on the night before Makar Sankranti. Families offer sesame, jaggery, peanuts and popcorn to the fire, and the first Lohri of a newborn child or a new bride is marked with special celebrations.
Good to know
Lohri is not on the Central Government holiday list. Punjab includes it in its own state list in some years, and RBI lists no nationwide bank holiday for it, so banks and offices in most of India work normally.
