Maha Shivratri falls on the Krishna Chaturdashi of Phalguna in the Purnimanta calendar (Magha in the Amanta calendar). Devotees fast, stay awake through the night and offer water, milk and bel leaves to the Shiva linga in the four prahars of the night; the date is taken from the tithi that runs at Nishita Kaal, around midnight.
Good to know
Maha Shivratri is one of the 12 optional holidays for Central Government offices and a restricted holiday in Delhi. Several states declare a bank holiday for it when it falls on a working day (in 2026 it fell on a Sunday); check the RBI list below for your city.
