Naraka Chaturdashi, also called Choti Diwali or Roop Chaudas, falls on the Chaturdashi of Kartika Krishna paksha and recalls Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. The ritual oil bath (abhyang snan) is taken before sunrise while Chaturdashi runs; in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka this morning is the main Deepavali. When Chaturdashi ends early in the day, it falls on the same date as Lakshmi Puja.

Good to know

Naraka Chaturdasi is a restricted holiday for Central Government offices. Where a state declares only Naraka Chaturdasi as its Diwali holiday, Central Government offices there may observe it instead of Diwali (DoPT O.M., para 6).
