Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala, celebrated over ten days from Atham to Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam. It recalls the return of King Mahabali; homes lay flower carpets (pookalam), families share the Onam sadya, and snake boat races are held on the backwaters. The date follows the Thiruvonam nakshatra, not a tithi.
