Good Friday

Good Friday is a solemn Christian holiday observed across India and the world to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. Falling on the Friday before Easter Sunday, it is marked by reflection, fasting, and prayer rather than celebration.

The origin of Good Friday lies in biblical accounts of the trial, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ in 1st-century Judea. According to the New Testament, Jesus was sentenced to death under Pontius Pilate, made to carry his cross to Golgotha, and crucified, laying down his life as a supreme sacrifice for humanity's redemption.

Early Christian communities incorporated the remembrance of Christ's death into Holy Week observances alongside Passover traditions. Over time, it became a core part of the Paschal Triduum, the solemn period leading to Easter Sunday. In India, Christian traditions have deep historic roots, beginning with Saint Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century AD and expanding further through later Catholic and Protestant missions in states such as Kerala, Goa, and across Northeast India.

In India, Good Friday is observed with quiet devotion, prayer, and solemnity. Believers gather for afternoon church liturgies centred on the Seven Last Words spoken by Jesus from the cross and the veneration of the Holy Cross. Parishes in Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and the Northeastern states hold public Way of the Cross processions or passion plays re-enacting Jesus' journey to Golgotha. Fasting and abstaining from meat are common, and worshippers in several regions drink a symbolic bitter concoction made from vinegared leaves to remember Christ's thirst and suffering.
