Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and its tenth day, known as Ashura, is observed across India as a solemn day of mourning and remembrance. The observance honours the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala.

The historical significance of Muharram centers on the Battle of Karbala, fought in 680 CE (61 AH) in modern-day Iraq. Imam Hussain, along with his small group of family members and companions, refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid I, whose rule he viewed as unjust and oppressive. Intercepted in the desert, Hussain's group was besieged and denied access to water for days before being killed in battle.

Imam Hussain's stance at Karbala became an enduring symbol of moral integrity and resistance against tyranny. In India, the tradition of observing Muharram developed distinct cultural forms over the centuries, particularly under the patronage of regional dynasties such as the Nawabs of Awadh, who constructed grand congregational halls known as imambaras for mourning assemblies.

During the first ten days of the month, Muslims gather at imambaras and community halls for majlis (commemorative lectures) detailing the tragic events of Karbala. On the day of Ashura, Shia mourners lead solemn processions carrying banners (alam) and elaborate bamboo and paper replicas of Imam Hussain's tomb, known as ta'ziya. Participants recite elegies (nauha) and engage in chest-beating (matam) as an expression of grief. Across various towns and cities, volunteer stalls called sabeels are set up along streets to distribute free water and cold drinks to the public, commemorating the thirst suffered by the martyrs.
